What does the checker look for?

Person names, email addresses, phone numbers, South African ID numbers, US Social Security numbers, UK National Insurance numbers, card numbers, IBANs, street addresses, vehicle VINs, IP addresses, dates of birth, API keys and crypto wallet addresses. It is the same detection engine the PII Shield browser extension uses.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. The detection engine downloads with the page and runs on your own device. Nothing you type is sent to PII Shield or to any third party, and there is no account, cookie or saved copy. The only thing this page reports is that it was visited, the same anonymous page count as every other page on this site.

Will it catch everything?

No detector catches everything, and names are the hardest, because a name has no fixed shape. If the checker misses something, treat that text with care before you paste it into an AI tool.

Is masking the same as anonymising?

No. Each value becomes a token like [PERSON_1], and the same person keeps the same token for the whole conversation. With PII Shield the real values go back into the AI's reply on your side only, so you can still act on the answer. Anonymising removes the values for good.

Is masking enough for POPIA or GDPR?

It is the most effective technical step, because the personal data never reaches the AI provider. You still need a lawful basis, a record of the processing and staff who know the rules. Our free DPIA template and employee AI-use notice cover the paperwork.
